“Donald Trump made me a lifelong Democrat.”

Video Transcript

“My name is Andrew. I live in New Jersey. I’m 30 years old and I voted for Donald Trump in 2016. Now I was in a very bad… I’m not making excuses for myself ’cause I messed up and I owe this entire country an apology, but I was in a very bad emotional and financial situation at the time. I really bought into that fearmongering, like that the immigrants were gonna take our jobs and stuff.

“I’m ashamed to say that now. I’m really ashamed of it. I’m ashamed that I ever thought that way because I wasn’t like that before. I just, really bought into the fearmongering that year, and everything about Hillary, I bought into that too. I realized very quickly what a horrible mistake that was.

“The tipping point for me was actually Puerto Rico. I was raised with the belief that the duty of a president should be to his own people, first off, and that’s still something I believe in. When Puerto Rico needed aid he didn’t send them any, and I said, you don’t get to do that. You don’t get to choose who’s an American and who’s not.

“You know, because Puerto Ricans, I don’t know who needs to hear this, Puerto Ricans are Americans. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, and the citizens of Puerto Rico are Americans. You don’t get to choose who’s American and who’s not, you know, and by what metric? By the language they speak? The color of their skin? Come on.

“So, you know, you don’t help Americans unless you help all Americans. And as it turns out, he didn’t help any Americans. Since 2018, I have shown up at every election and I have voted blue down the ballot. Just straight ticket. Donald Trump made me a lifelong Democrat.

“I voted for Joe Biden in 2020 and I intend to again.”
